AM I SOBER YET?

FAQ

Frequently questioned decisions.

Everything you probably wanted to know about the calculator without having to ask your browser at 2 AM.

Is the BAC number exact?+

No. It is an estimate generated from the information you enter. A website calculator cannot directly measure your blood alcohol concentration.

Why do you ask for my weight?+

Body weight is one of the variables traditionally used in BAC estimation models because the same amount of alcohol can produce different estimated concentrations in people of different body sizes.

Why do you ask for biological sex?+

Traditional Widmark-style calculations commonly use different body-water distribution factors. The calculator uses that information as one input to the mathematical estimate.

What is a standard drink?+

In the United States, a standard drink is commonly defined as containing about 0.6 fluid ounces of pure alcohol. Different beverages can contain the same amount of alcohol despite having very different serving sizes.

Why does the time I drank matter?+

The calculator models alcohol elimination over time. A drink consumed several hours ago is treated differently from one consumed very recently.

Can I use this to determine if I'm safe to drive?+

No. You should never use an estimated BAC from this website as a decision rule for driving. If you've been drinking, use a sober driver, rideshare, taxi, public transportation, or another safe option.

Does 0.00% mean I'm definitely sober?+

No. A calculated 0.00% only means the mathematical model has reached zero. It does not measure your actual BAC or account for every factor affecting your body.

Why is my result different from another calculator?+

Different calculators can use different formulas, body-water factors, alcohol conversions, elimination rates, rounding methods, and assumptions.

Does eating change the result?+

Food can affect alcohol absorption and the timing of peak BAC. A simple calculator cannot accurately model the full effect of a meal, so its estimate should not be treated as a measurement.

Do you store my information?+

The calculator is designed to work without requiring an account. See the Privacy page for the current site's data practices.
